Clifton Special Police
  Special Police History

During World War II, many regular police officers were called upon to join the war effort. This left a void back home with regard to law enforcement services. Members of the community were pressed into service to supplement the regular police department. Originally known as Auxiliary or Reserve Police Officers, these individuals assisted with various aspects of policing The City of Clifton.

In more modern times, the Auxiliary and Reserve forces joined together and became known as Special Police Officers. Today, all Clifton Special Officers must meet the qualifications of N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146. They all have Class II status and perform various law enforcement functions.
